I am thankful for the voice that Heavenly Father has given me. May I ever use it to praise His name.

Sunday Morning Stake Conference, 3-24-13
3-24-13 Sunday Morning Stake Conference
(These are my notes; they have not yet been revised)
President Kinser—sustainings
President Garvin
Deep appreciation; thankful for kind acts of service. Spirit bore witness of Elder Garne’s goodness and the necessity of following his counsel.
Daughter developed interest in ice skating. Impressed with symmetry of paired skaters. Wife had interest in BYU ballroom dancing. Pairs impressive. Unity expressed in step moving at times. These cannot approach husband and wife working together with in harmony with the gospel in their homes and raising their families. Synchronized swimming also impressive. The beauty and greatest of a family working together acting in harmony with the gospel. Some families find themselves under water, but they continue to work together as one.
We have the tools to work together in harmony.
1. Come unto Christ effort.
Family prayer, family scripture study, family home evening, and the blessings of church activity.
Rodgersons—recently sealed in the temple. Together than can weather adversity well, and they can come off conquerors.
Remember the times when all of us knew that home was a part of heaven, and the dews of heaven distilled upon our family.
Prayer is, as it were, the breath of life to my soul. President Garvin
Tears shed in happy unity of purpose.
Grateful for the scriptures; iron rod that has blessed my life. Reread chapter in Book of Mormon over and over again; received strength to do what previously had seemed impossible. Comforting assurance that we can achieve the oneness that is expected of us. Blessings will come as you see your children married in the temple. (Gold medals) As you join with them in blessing their children. Etc. Surely there couldn’t have been a happier people.
Sister Amy Shellhouse
God lives and we are His children. Christ lives and has made it possible for us to return to Heavenly Father. Standards. The church stands as an anchor in a world of shifting values. D&C 115:5: Arise and shine forth, that thy light may be a standard to the nations.
Rise to higher ground. Be so sure of our faith that there is no room for any doubt.
President Monson admonishes youth to build testimony which will keep them safe. Be firm in faith, so when trials come, we will know what we believe. My beliefs define who I am.
Truly felt Savior’s love and her testimony was strengthened. We never know who we can touch. If even one is touched, the trials are worth it. We can be the difference, and we can bring the change. I know that God lives, and I am His daughter. I know that Christ lives, and that He is my older brother.
Sister
Isaiah 2:2-3
Mountain of the Lord. We go to the temple to receive revelation, our own endowments, others endowments, to have our prayers answered.
D&C 87:8 Stand in Holy place and be not moved. Stand strong. Don’t let things of world pull us away. Remember that we have made covenants and that we must keep our covenants.
D&C 97:15-16 Don’t suffer uncleanness in Lord’s house. Glory will be upon it. See God.
We need to keep the commandments and do our best to live as disciples of Christ. Striving for perfection.
Howard W. Hunter—Temple loving people. Hasten to temple as time and means allow.
Place of beauty, revelation, peace, house of Lord, holy to Lord, should be holy to us.
Mosiah 2: People gather together, go up to temple. Pitched tents round about with door towards to temple. We need to center our lives around the temple. Do we center our lives around Jesus Christ and around the temple?
Sealed as family in Mesa Temple. Second experience travelling with youth from San Diego to Mesa for baptisms. (Her husband was on one of those buses, but they didn’t know it.)
Stand in holy places—for it cometh quickly saith the Lord. Timothy 4:12. Gather together and stand in holy places.
President Faust says we stand in so many unholy places; strive to stand often in holy places. Temples, place of holiness and comfort. Take our families; search for records of kindred dead. Holiness is a strength of the soul—faith and obedience.
Fear not, I am with thee, O, be not dismayed.
Draw near unto me, and I will draw near unto you.
Sister Godwin
Grateful for people in this stake and how good we are to the missionaries.
Painting of person carrying so many things. Rod of iron over his head. He can’t let go of any of his possessions to grab the iron rod.
The missionaries let go of the things of the world when they come out to serve the Lord. It is difficult for them to do that. But they have a testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ. That’s why they come.
Blessings and physical evidence of miracles in missionaries lives because of their level of commitment. Their commitments are intensified with the experiences that they have. “This diligence and obedience stuff that you are always talking about is finally kicking in.”
We are all away from home for a season. We need to realize our commitment as well, and let the things of the world go behind.
Mormons believe in Christ. We believe in living prophets. Do we remember what he has said?
Little boy wanted to shake the prophets hand; Sister Kapp shook his hand so he could say that he shook hands with someone who had shaken hands with the prophet.
We have the opportunity every week to take the sacrament.
President Godwin
Touched in heart when President Garvin said this will be their last Stake Conference here.
Elder Ballard in Hisperia: lifted hand and asked everyone else to; then they shook hands together.
Alma 29: O that I were angel. Missionaries are a trumpet crying repentance and love.
Faith—the first principle of the gospel. Faith is an oasis in the heart that cannot be realized by a caravan of learning. Faith comes from experiences in which you have hope. Faith—things that are hoped for and not seen. Declare our hope, our desire for something. Go about doing something to bring it about.
Exercising faith is more than having faith. Physically manifest it. Holy Ghost can testify of truth of something you are doing. Holy Ghost will testify, not as we are thinking about it, but as we are doing.
Missionaries—be prepared to teach a lesson and go to that lesson. If they weren’t there, there would be someone else very close prepared to receive that message. The missionaries went about 200 yards to teach the very lesson to a man in an apartment building. Tears came; they brought an answer to his prayer. They left him a Book of Mormon and passalong card to Mormon.org. They went back the next day. He had read 36 chapters. He went to Mormon.org for 2-3 hours. What did you learn? I learned that the gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored to the earth, and that the prophet Joseph Smith was called to restore the gospel, and that there is a prophet on the earth today, Thomas S. Monson. I know by what you’ve taught and by what I’ve studied that these things are true and I want to be baptized. He was baptized 3 or 4 weeks later.
Matt 14—Savior teaching on desert hills. 5 loaves and two fishes. God and feed the multitude. 5,000 men + women and children. They fed everybody. 12 baskets of fragments left. Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; He said go and do, and they did.
As we exercise our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, He will make all things possible.
He will prepare us to return to Heavenly Father.
Patriarch Stehmeyer
A wonderful feeling to be standing before you. Opportunity to serve in this stake for 53 years. He’s seen Patriarchs whom he has thought very highly of. He never thought it would happen to him. He knows, like Nephi, that he’d never be called to any calling to which the Lord would show and help you with the calling.
He has a testimony. He asks for our prayers. That through the Holy Ghost those who receive a blessing will know that it come through Heavenly Father.
Coming up on 60 years of marriage. “The Lord will guide you. You will do whatever the Lord will ask of you.” “And I’ll try. I’ll humbly ask for His help in fulfilling this calling.”
Testimony.
Sister Garnes
No ‘greater gift that you can give to your parents than to be a faithful son or daughter of God. Align yourself with the gospel of Jesus Christ, so that you may give that sweet gift to your parents.
Heavenly Father is aware of our burdens; He knows our journey, and He knows what we need.
We are led in this church by a prophet of God. Elder Garnes watches the 7 presidents of the Seventy and does what they do. Prophet entered jovially. As that they came in, they stood; when they sat, they sat. Prophet peered around and winked at her. Great sensitivity that prophet has is real.
We have the true gospel of Jesus Christ led by prophets, seers, and revelators that are in tune with Heavenly Father’s plan. Obedience—first law of heaven. If we follow, we will be blessed.
She didn’t hear her husband’s command to move; the boat lost balance, and they all went under.
They prayed. A boat came out of nowhere. Two young men; they saw the children and came. One of the men helped right the catamaran.
Grateful for healing power in her life. Miracle to be healed of cancer. She prayed that the Lord will glance her way. She told the doctor that she knows that there is a God in heaven, and she knows that there is a Savior, and that they answer our prayers. We need to bear witness of them, no matter what the answers will be.
Be faithful, follow the prophet, we will be blessed and our families will return.
Elder Garnes
Godwins real dedication and consecration to the Savior. He was still Stake President as he became a Mission President.
Faulty—the more righteous we are, the fewer trials we’ll have.
The Lord will not take trials from us. Although, we will feel the Lord’s blessings for our righteousness.
He thought one little piece of sheet metal was insignificant to his car, but once there was a little strain, he realized differently.
If we are neglecting the little things, when trials come, we will not be prepared. We will overheat; something is going to happen and not work out. It is by the small and simple things that great things are brought to pass and that we have the strength to deal with the challenges in life.
The Lord has a line; it does not move. Hopefully, our line is moving closer to the Lord as we live His commandments.
The little things that we do in life, and try to justify that it’s okay; not the way it works; the Lord has a standard, and it isn’t okay to leave the little things out.
How does prayer fit it?
Youth curriculum—assuring that they have experiences that will develop faith and deeper conversion. They are being asked to take a step in life—not only knowing what is right, but being what is right. Youth are being asked to step it up and be prepared earlier. What does that mean to the rest of us?
D&C 88 I will raise up elders and send them unto you. I will hasten my work in its time. President Monson is fulfilling prophesy. We have a responsibility to be a part of this. We have a responsibility to make this happen, make sure that they are prepared.
We are not just seeking transfer of knowledge. We need to provide experiences that will change lives; that they will know in their hearts that the Savior lives and their testimonies strengthened. Change our ways and increase our capacity.
Obedience. The key to success here and throughout eternities. Hallmark of all great prophets, and source of their strength. The prophets understand the plight that we are in.
Mosiah 3:19: The natural man is an enemy to God. Become a saint. Willing to submit to all things as a child submits to His father. He understood how we feel today.
Paul –For the good that I would, I do not. But the evil which I would not, that I end up doing.
We can do it. The Lord will bless us with that strength.
Luke—those things that are impossible with man, are possible with God.
We need the Lord to be able to do the things that we should do.
Prayer of Faith
Please help me that I will be able to do more than I can do on my own. Our Heavenly Father is waiting in the wings to help us do those things that we cannot do on our own.

Saturday Evening Session Stake Conference, 3-23-13
3-23-13 Evening Session Stake Conference
(These are my notes; they have not yet been revised.)
President Kinser
Fear of D&C 68:25—Teach your children , or else. If we do not teach them, the sin be upon us.
King Mosiah was given keys of kingdom by father Benjamin. His sons went about trying to destroy the church. His and Alma’s prayers were answered. An angel of the Lord came and gave them a wake up call, changed their lives, and changed the course of many people.
His sons went to teach the Lamanites. He was assured that they’d be delivered out of the hands of the Lamanites, many would believe in their words, and they would have eternal life.
Don't know much about you
Don't know who you are
We've been doing fine without you
But, we could only go so far
Don't know why you chose us
Were you watching from above
Is there someone there that knows us
Said we'd give you all our love
Will you laugh just like your mother
Will you sigh like your old man
Will some things skip a generation
Like I've heard they often can
Are you a poet or a dancer
A devil or a clown
Or a strange new combination of
The things we've handed down
I wonder who you'll look like
Will your hair fall down and curl
Will you be a mama's boy
Or daddy's little girl
Will you be a sad reminder
Of what's been lost along the way
Maybe you can help me find her
In the things you do and say
And these things that we have given you
They are not so easily found
But you can thank us later
For the things we've handed down
You may not always be so grateful
For the way that you were made
Some feature of your father's
That you'd gladly sell or trade
And one day you may look at us
And say that you were cursed
But over time that line has been
Extremely well rehearsed
By our fathers, and their fathers
In some old and distant town
From places no one here remembers
Come the things we've handed down

It was his belief that in every generation, the parents become better parents.
Reflect on your role as a parent. What are you handing down? What kind of parent are you going to be?
One cannot conceived of a parent not being interested in everything that pertains to his children…(Richard L. Evans)
How do we strengthen our families in the gospel and hand down the truths that we know?

Proclamation in regards to the raising of these children. (The discharge, not the acceptance.)
Help them understand that we will love them always.
Just as Adam sought the counsel of the Lord, so our children seek our counsel, even when it seems that they do not want it. When the prodigal returned, he knew that his father wouldn’t reject him, because he knew his father. Have open hearts and arms for all your family members. They don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.
He told his children about the crucifixion and the nails driven through the hands and feet of the Savior. He had the opportunity to let his children know that he knew it was true. As family likens scriptures to themselves, they will learn to trust the Lord. They will know that they are children of God, have the sword of faith and the shield of …
That Brandon is just heart-headed about the way he lives his life. He told the coaches that there behavior was not appropriate; the team expected more with them. He learned how to communicate with respect as a result of serving a mission.
As faith in the Lord grows in our families, our homes will become a haven from the world. We need to ensure that our homes maintain a contrast between what we see in the world.
Sacred nature of family; greatest joy in families; not greater work.
Sister Suzanne Ewell
Just sent her first missionary on a mission. Song—A young man prepared.
Mothers who raised young men prepared—Army of Helaman. They paid tribute to their mothers. They had buried their weapons and past mistakes deep in the earth. They made covenants.
We must honor our covenants so that our children and youth understand covenant keeping. We do not doubt our mothers knew it.
The responsibility of parents has never required more diligence.
One of my greatest blessings has to be a mother. We need righteous women to bring children into their homes.
Nothing will be so important as the question of how your children turned out. (Hinckley)
Obey every word of commandment with exactness and honor. Helaman would not allow their parents to break their covenant. They sent their sons to war with faith in Christ.
Attending church week after week helps to develop stripling warriors.
As we do things consistently in our lives, we are adding a drop to the oil of our lives and our children’s lives. (Joy in first son passing sacrament. That’s the point.)
Mary Fielding Smith’s 9-year-old had to lead the oxen team. He was successful. In their home in SL Valley, they ate together and studied scriptures. Out of this home, came two prophets. It takes courage to meet our expectations of being good parents. We need to practice righteous patterns consistently in our homes.
Mothers should teach children about prayer. Let your children see you praying. She loved her mother for her faith and for seeing her pray. Miracles were performed in their family’s life because her mother had faith.
We need to expect our children to do hard things. Have the courage to expect something of our kids and not let them off easy.
We need women who are tender and kind and refined and faith and goodness and virtue and purity.
If we don’t teach our children, the world will. It’s worth it; don’t give up. These little children are learning a lot, and Satan is not able to tempt them, so don’t miss the opportunity.
As mothers, we have a great work to do; by small and simple things, great things are brought to pass.
Sister Sandy Kerr
Attentive, reverent, sweet Spirit here.
It takes many hands to make the temple run smoothly.
Saints that received their own endowment today. Each of us has a story; we have entered the path to lead us back to our home.
Temple work is all about families. As work is done vicariously for our brothers and sisters, one by one, the Lord is pleased. It is a privilege to do the Lord’s work in any capacity. Covenants empower us to do things beyond our own abilities.
Her feelings of inadequacy. Satan, the destroyer, cannot create, so he spends his time trying to destroy: depression, despair… The Savior always has more power. We can rise above these things as we put our trust in the Savior. The temple helps. His Spirit is there; personal revelation is received there; answers to problems. Please come to the temple. The gifts of the Spirit are abundant in that holy place.
Lives are changed as people make commitments to come to the temple. Your lives will be better as you invest time in the temple. Reality of Savior and His work; we all have the opportunity to be engaged in this work, and to feel of his power. May we take advantage.
President Nolan Kerr
Participated in ROTC in college. 6-week summer camp, army camp in Washington. Rifle training. (Hit first, second target. Young man behind him called out miss. Third same thing. The young man in next fox hole is getting credit. He has been shooting down the other young man’s range than down his own range.) If we are lined up on the wrong targets in our lives, it doesn’t matter how successful we’ve been, when the time comes to tally up the score, we will not have scored very well.
One of the most important targets for us is the temple. Prepare to receive own endowment. Line up better, and attend more often.
Elder Scott—Don’t let things of world crowd in and take higher priority than the important things. Satan would have us fill our lives with “good” things, so that there is not time of essential things. Ordinances of the temple are essential; we cannot return to God’s glory without them.
Water your grass so that the roots go deep.
If we are not going to the temple and remembering the covenants that we’ve made, we are just living on the mists and not developing roots; and when trials come, it will be stripped away.
April 1929—Orson F. Whitney Eternal sealings of faithful parents and the divine promises made to them for the valiant causes in the cause of truth, will save them and their posterity. Pray for careless and disobedient children…hold on, trust on, until you see the salvation of God.
Sean Goodrich
He just lost his hear and doesn’t know where it is. Challenges. He knows temple blessings are important. You will receive answers there; even if they are not expected. You will feel the Spirit in the ways you can’t anywhere else. Savior died for us so that we can all be saved. He will help you if you pray and come to Him honestly. You don’t have to be perfect to receive blessings and to have His love in your life. The scriptures will guide us and help us. It will give you want you need at that time. It will give you the instructions that you need, that you cannot receive anywhere else.
Sister Rogerson
I lost my heart, too.
She was inactive for a time. She has two children. Four years ago, she met her husband. Her daughter wanted to know why they couldn’t go into the temple. She explained, and her daughter said, “Let’s do this.” They began the missionary lessons. They started going to church. Her husband started going to church with them. Two years ago, he began missionary lessons. They got married one day; he was baptized the next. Last month they were sealed. Temple prep classes were amazing. They are trying to be there every week. So grateful that her daughter wanted the lessons, and that they had great sister missionaries to give them the lessons.
Sister Garnes
Heart pounding for two that preceded her. So grateful for good spirits, and their desire to bear testimony on such short notice.
The counsel we’ve received tonight is what we need to know to strengthen our families and put our families on the path to eternal life. Take it home and implement it.
As I have been obedient, attended the temple, listened to the Spirit. Every opportunity for our success.
Her mother just passed away. During a mission (president), two of their sons between inactive. Given set of scriptures, continue on mission, continue declare what is true. The laborer is worthy of his hire; her family would return. Because of temple covenants, her parents will retrieve their children.
Intruders in home; husband slept; she prayed. Cautioned not to wake husband again. Spirit said not to. Crawl over him and get to phone. Call operator and whisper help.; Cautioned not to do it. Third, crawl out window and run to neighbors; Cautioned not to do it. Crawled back into bed; put covers over head. Nothing happened. Lucky that there was no confrontation. Good thing that they did what they did. Her first reaction was to do something.
We will have intruders every day of our lives; people will want to come into our homes and destroy our peace; we are bombarded. Vital to lives, physically and spiritually. Pay attention to the Spirit and do what is directed. Keep the invaders from coming in and penetrating our safety.
What can I do to protect my children so that I can bring them back to thee? Dream—beams created a Z on front door: family prayers; scriptures; family home evening. Those are the things that will keep the world out of our homes; latch the door to keep our homes holy, peaceful, and a place of refuge.
The Lord loves us and He is grateful for the saints who are trying so hard.
Her son sent out letter about genealogy. A lady with name Garnes in line gave them 76,000 names of work to do in the temple. The Lord loves his people; He is trying in every way to recover us; we have a responsibility to make it happen. Hold on, be obedient, be committed.
Elder Garnes
Married 37 years. Thankful for how she raised children and continues to raise him. Bright light; vision for what they should be and where they should go.
President Garvin is a humble and strong man at the same time. Blessed to hear him counsel and bear testimony to members of the stake. He is a man of God, called of God; he is leading the stake in a righteous way; the way the Lord would lead if He were here Himself.
Everything that’s been said here tonight is true and wonderful.
Bear testimony of personal things; principles and doctrines that they are living. It is who they are, disciples of Jesus Christ. They wouldn’t be able to bear their testimonies without living it.
Grateful for the Ewels and their righteous example. Getting to the Celestial Kingdom is all about doing the hard thing. Prove to Heavenly Father that we can follow Him when it is easy and when it’s hard.
It take trust, trust in the Lord. 1 Nephi 4—Ready to go back and get plates. Two times, driven out, lost their possessions. Nephi went back. I was led by the Spirit, not knowing beforehand the things that I should do.
We’ve all been in that place. We may have thought impossible. Nevertheless, went forth. First step, when we don’t know what to do—Trust in Lord.; Things will work out.
Packer—Need to walk to edge of light; take step into darkness; with that faith, the Lord will light the way just a bit so we can find our way. He will not light the way until we show our trust.
Those things that are impossible with men, are possible with God.
Parents, from Park City, moved to Los Angeles. Didn’t fit in, inactive 12 years. They became active. He didn’t know anything but active parents. They served in the church. Wonderful parents. Journeyman. The private in the army. Did the work; not a lot of recognition. His dad called to be Bishop at 65-years-old. Served 5 years. Just before age not to go on mission; Stake President called them in to release as Bishop and call them on a mission. “We’ll think about it.”
Dad said they should go to temple and pray about it. Mother, “I don’t want to go to the temple and pray about it.” They reconciled new path and served a mission. They enjoyed it. South Carolina. Set example for family: this is who we are. Family culture. We are teacher our children and then grandchildren that this is who we are: we serve missions.
Daughter said she didn’t want to go on mission. But I feel like the Lord wants her to go and that she should go. The Lord blessed her for doing the hard thing.
Faust—I am grateful for those experiences that I had wished I didn’t have.
Be grateful for trials in our lives. We are better people because of the hard stuff.
Seldom has found success in the first mile; but has often found great success in the second mile. First effort is an expression of our desire to do a duty; if we pursue it to produce fruit, the second mile is usually done out of love. Put forth effort; more difficult. Endure to the end. Don’t give up on each other. 3 Nephi 18:32—Don’t cast them out; unto such shall you continue to minister. They may return and repent, and I shall heal them. Not giving up on each other. Wonderful to be a part of relations when others are converted. Grateful for the encouragement we find in sharing the gospel.
Elder Cook, October conference: Talking to leaders around world. Church is doing well in general sense.
One challenge—living in world that is increasingly wicked.
Concerned about apathy and lack of commitment with some members. Lack of commitment.
Deepen our conversion and commitment to the Lord.
No outside worldly support for problems with chastity: immorality and pornography. We need to be teaching in our homes.
The Lord and Savior loves us all; He will bless us as we serve in the Church and teach in our homes. He will fill in the gaps and teach us the way. Treasure up words of life; given to us in very hour we need. We will know what to say and do. Thankful for prophet and his vision to guide us. They lead this Church today according to the will of the Lord.

Living Prophets Today
http://burst.to/2ga
I was reviewing some conference notes found in earlier blogs, and I came across
Elder Claudio R. M. Costa's talk from October 2010 General Conference.
Along with Elder Costa, I feel to say,
After I read, pondered, and prayed, the Lord gave me the assurance that Joseph Smith was a prophet. I know that all his successors are prophets.
Prophet—a person called by God to speak in His name. It is a great blessing to receive the word the Lord.
1. The prophet is the only man that speaks for the Lord in everything.
2. The living prophet is more vital to us than the standard works.
3. The living prophet is more important to us than the dead prophets.
4. The prophet will never lead the church astray.
5. The prophet doesn’t need to have any special credentials.
The Lord called a young man, Joseph Smith, to lead the Church. He was chosen by the Lord, and he
Elder Costa testified of true prophet, counselors, and quorum of the twelve.
I am thankful to my Heavenly Father and to His Son Jesus Christ for their remarkable love for me. Because they know all things, and because I do not, I will put my trust in them as a daughter. It is through the Spirit that I do know that I am a literal spirit child of my Heavenly Father; it is through the Spirit and through obedience to the principles and ordinances of the gospel that I also became a child of Jesus Christ and took upon me His name. It is through the Gift of the Holy Ghost that I can continue in faith and virtue, keeping the commandments and putting my trust in the Lord and His prophets until the perfect day. Without prophets both ancient and modern, I would not know of God's great love for me. I indeed am thankful for living prophets!
I am thankful for the counsel and teachings of all the prophets during my lifetime. I know that they were called of God just like the prophets that we revere in the scriptures.

"What a great blessing it is to have prophets in our day!"
Here are my notes from that conference:After I read, pondered, and prayed, the Lord gave me the assurance that Joseph Smith was a prophet. I know that all his successors are prophets.
Prophet—a person called by God to speak in His name. It is a great blessing to receive the word the Lord.
He will reveal his will to us and He will instruct us through His prophets. If we believe in Him, we will follow His prophets and do what He asked us to do. When I accepted baptism into the church, I covenanted to always follow the prophet.
Points made by President Benson
He was chosen by the Lord, and he
received from the Lord the gifts he needed to do His work.
6. The prophet doesn’t need to say “thus saith the Lord” to be speaking for the Lord.
7. The prophet tells us what we need to know, not always what we want to know.
8. The prophet is not limited by man’s reasoning.
9. The prophet can receive a revelation on any matter, temporal or spiritual.
10. The prophet may be involved in civic matters.
11. The two groups who have difficulty following the prophet are the proud who are learned and the proud
who are rich.
12. The prophet will not necessarily be popular with the world or the worldly.
13. The prophet and his counselors make up the first presidency, the highest quorum in the church.
14. The prophet and the presidency—follow them and be blessed; reject them and suffer.

Elder Costa testified of true prophet, counselors, and quorum of the twelve.
Now for my testimony:
I finished reading the Book of Mormon for the first time when I was 12. I remember praying early one evening to know if the Book is true. The warmth and power of the Spirit filling my bosom was enlightening and expanding. I had never experienced the Spirit to that degree before, and I knew that The Book of Mormon is true. My heart felt it and my mind comprehended it. I remember wanting to hold onto that feeling. I did not want to participate in any other earthly activity that evening. I had received a witness from the heavens.
A couple of years later, my older sister Sheila invited me to go with her to a play. I believe that it was called A Day, a Night, and a Day. I had been fasting to know if Joseph Smith was a prophet of God. I remember having a strong witness in answer to my prayer at the end of that day, and following that production, that Joseph truly was a prophet.
I have felt the Spirit many times confirm to me that the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ found in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is true. I have felt the witness of the Spirit on many occasions as I have sought for the Lord's direction and to do His will.
In one of my saddest times, after the death and temporary loss of our son Robby, I had a witness, in a very real and personal way, that Jesus Himself is aware of me and that His love for me knows no bounds. At this time, I felt these words from Him, "Thy sins are forgiven thee." Indeed, it is when our hearts are broken and we exercise faith in Him that we are not only healed from our emotional and spiritual wounds, but we receive a remission of our sins. (See Matthew 9:2-8)
I can also testify that when our most recent prophet Gordon B. Hinckley passed away, I saw the mantle of authority shift to our new prophet Thomas S. Monson. As he spoke in a news' address, I indeed knew that he is a prophet of God.
In our confusing world today, there are important things that we must do to not be deceived. We must pray; we must fast if we are able (and, if not, we must carry the spirit of the fast); we must study our scriptures; we must partake of the sacrament worthily; and we must support the prophets of God.
It is a wicked and adulterous generation that must have everything shown unto them before they believe that it is from God. (See Matthew 12:39, Matthew 16:4) It is sad to note that even when the Lord Jesus Christ was on the earth, not only as God's Prophet, but as His Son, there were people who demanded proof that the things He taught were true.
God has placed prophets on this earth for instruction, for counsel, and to issue His calls and commandments. Some try to separate the commandments from the counsel, like the one is from God and the other is merely opinion. This is not so. We need to accept the words from the prophets as though they are God's own words, which they are. (See Doctrine and Covenants 1:37-38) And we need to trust that the Lord knows all things and that it is His right to counsel us through prophets. We should accept His counsel and stop seeking to counsel Him. (Jacob 4:10)
We Thank Thee O God for a Prophet

Integrity
http://burst.to/1R3
Integrity--to me this means much more than honesty. Integrity means to be true.
(I commit myself to doing so with these words taken from a fellow sister in Australia, "I will not and choose not to deter myself from doing the Lord's work.")
Integrity--to me this means much more than honesty. Integrity means to be true.
Let me give you an example in a building. For a building to
have integrity it needs a firm foundation. I believe that it is the same for a
person.
It took many years for the Salt Lake Temple to be built.
When the first foundation was laid, President Brigham Young realized that there
were flaws in the foundation. Can you see how tragic it would have been to
continue to build at this point? The foundation had to be dug up and completely
reset. Can you see where I am going with this? We need a sure foundation. "And
now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who
is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the
devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea,
when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no
power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because
of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation
whereon if men build they cannot fall." (Helaman 5:12) There are many
people who approach integrity in the modern sense of the word, because they are
true to a set of standards, but if those standards are incorrect, if that
foundation is not firm, everything contingent upon it may soon fall. So
integrity is something more than being the same person in private and public
matters; it must include being true to a true set of standards.
During WWII, my Grandfather John Jamison was commissioned by
the British Air Force to oversee the building of runways on an American Air
Force base that was located in England. He was from Northern Ireland. He
arrived at the site when a crew was ready to pour the cement for a runway. They
did not know who he was, but he overheard them say, "Let's hurry and get
this poured before that damned Irishman gets here." Upon gathering that
the materials were not up to standard, my grandfather did not introduce
himself, but allowed them to pour the cement. After which he told them that he
was that damned Irishman and asked them to take it all out. It is my experience
that it is always more expensive to be dishonest, even though it usually does
not seem so in today's world. We cannot afford the cost to our own progression
and spiritual safety to be dishonest.
Think of the excitement that came about when steel was
introduced into building structures. Iron wasn't nearly as effective. Why is
that? Iron is very brittle. It couldn't support many stories or withstand too
much weight without breaking. Steel had the right amount of give. I guess in
this sense that having integrity would approach or almost be equivalent to
having charity. We cannot become too boastful as our abilities increase, or the
level of our building becomes substantial. We need to learn to be flexible
without bending on the important things that help keep us structurally sound.
This brings to mind the musical Fiddler on the Roof. I love Tevia. He is a good man. In the sense
of building upon the traditions and faith of his people, one could certainly
say that Tevia had integrity. Even when his workhorse becomes lame, Tevia
delivers the milk to the town before the Sabbath introductory evening meal. In his compassion to his daughters, we see his
flexibility as he allows the two oldest daughters to choose their own mates to
marry. The concept of love versus a matchmaker is new, but Tevia's steel allows
him to bend. But because of the covenant nature of the Jewish people and the
importance of marrying in the covenant, Tevia could not see the possibility of
condoning Havilah's marriage to an outsider. He said that "If I bend that
far, I will break." Whether we agree with his decision or not, this is a
good example of staying true to those things that are going to help keep us
structurally sound. I could bring up modern-day examples, but those would
divert me from my topic.
Now let's look at integrity from the side of a linguist. The
word integrity has the same root as the word integer. That root would imply
whole or complete. When the Lord asked us to become perfect, He was in essence
asking us to become whole or complete. This is something we cannot do on our
own. Jesus is the only One who can make us whole or complete. When I think of
integrity in this sense, it reminds me of the words in one of our hymns,
"Constant He is and kind, love without end." (Hymn, 129) In this sense, while
integrity is a goal, it is not a destination that is fixed yet for any of us,
because we are still in a period of testing. I am not Constant yet, though I
truly am striving to be a person of integrity.
By this I do not mean to say that integrity does not exist.
Of course it does. But we have to be vigilant to keep our integrity with us.
Also, I do not mean to imply that Latter-day Saints have access to integrity
more than anyone else. Since we all our children of the Highest, we all have
access to the gifts of the Spirit, to the power of the Holy Ghost, and to the
ability to develop integrity. But integrity is only built as we consistently
live principles that are in harmony with the gospel of Jesus Christ. And so
many non-Christians do that. For us as Latter-day Saints, it also means that we
must make and keep our covenants. For all of God's children, it means that we
have to be true to the light and knowledge that we possess. As we do so, we
will be led to more light and knowledge. This way, we will become more fully
finished, more complete, and have more integrity.
Now let's look at integrity from a mathematician's
perspective. An integer is not merely a counting number or a whole number. On a
number line, integers go in both positive and negative directions. So they
include -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, and so forth in both directions. We know that
God is infinite, complete, whole, and our true source of integrity. Integrity
in this sense certainly implies wholeness and completeness. We are not left
fragmented by either fractions or factions, and we are not decimated by
decimals. In the sense of a mathematician, integrity would also imply
congruity. Things will fit together and make perfect sense. There is not room
from inconsistency from any angle. (This will also totally work with the
analogy of the building.) So we need to take our compass, our protractor, and
our right angles, and make certain that our lives are congruent with the Lord.
Joseph F. Smith is a prime example of integrity. His father
Hyrum was killed at Carthage Jail when Joseph was only five. Then his mother Mary
Fielding Smith died when he was only thirteen. But he was true to the faith of his
fathers. He served a mission in Hawaii when he was still a boy.
After nearly four years in Hawaii,
Joseph F. returned home. One morning when he and several other missionaries
were returning to Salt Lake City, a group of rough Mormon-haters rode up on
horses, firing their guns and cursing.
The leader jumped off his horse and
shouted, “We will kill anyone who is a Mormon!” The other missionaries had fled
into the woods, but Joseph F. bravely stood his ground. The man shoved a gun in
Joseph F.’s face and asked, “Are you a Mormon?”
Joseph F. stood tall and said, “Yes
siree; dyed in the wool; true blue, through and through!”
The man was surprised at his reply.
He put the gun away, shook Joseph’s hand, and said, “Well, you are the
pleasantest man I ever met! I’m glad to see a fellow stand up for his
convictions.” He jumped back on his horse and rode off with his companions.
Then we have the example of Joseph F. Smith's Uncle Joseph
Smith. He saw the Father and the Son. And because he gave a true account of the
First Vision, he was persecuted by those who should have been his friends. Life
was never easy for him. But he said that he had in all actuality "seen a
vision; I knew it, and I knew that God knew it, and I could not deny it,
neither dared I do it." He pressed forward and was true to the faith, and he
obeyed the Lord's commandments with exactness.
Since we are on a roll, let's talk about one more Joseph.
This Joseph was sold into bondage by his brothers because they were jealous of
him. But because he was so talented and so good, he naturally was blessed and
rose to the top. (Have you noticed that many are still jealous of people like
Joseph?) Potiphar's wife thought he was pretty sexy and wanted him for herself,
but he would not sin against the God of Israel and chose to be in jail rather
than to lose his integrity before the Lord. He was blessed for his
righteousness; in fact, all of Egypt was, his whole family was, and all of his
descendents have been, including many Latter-day Saints.
Integrity must certainly mean that we stand up for our
convictions. The Apostle Paul stood up for his convictions both before and
after his conversion to the Resurrected Jesus Christ. He was honorable in his
convictions, but it is always best to be on the Lord's side. Remember the
scripture about the only true and sure foundation? That is Jesus Christ. That
brings me back to Charity, which is the Pure Love of Christ. We are told that
charity will never fail. So in order for our integrity to be valid and true and
never fail, we must be built upon that sure foundation. It is only through
Jesus Christ that we can be whole and complete and overcome the world and not
fail.
We must also love our brothers and sisters as ourselves. Our
integrity all but vanishes when we do not. If we do not treat our fellowmen as
we would like to be treated ourselves, we don't have integrity. That's a double
standard. Integrity is a tall order to fill. But it should be our goal, not
just for the far distant future, but for every day of our lives.
In closing I would like to share some of Moroni's last words
to us, found in Moroni 7:15-16. These words are a good yardstick for us in
making our daily decisions and keeping us on the true path:
For behold, my brethren, it is
given unto you to judge, that ye may know good from evil; and the way to judge
is as plain, that ye may know with a perfect knowledge, as the daylight is from
the dark night.
For behold, the Spirit of Christ is
given to every man, that he may know good from evil; wherefore,
I show unto you the way to judge; for every thing which inviteth to do good,
and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of
Christ; wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of God.
In today's world, there will be many voices to lead us here, there, and everywhere. We need to keep our hearts, minds, and spirits tuned to the Lord so that we can be guided through the Holy Ghost. We need to carry our level with us, meaning our own testimony and our own oil, if we are going to make certain that our lives are properly balanced and in harmony with the Lord. Integrity means vigilance. We must be aware of anything that can erode our structure, and me must seek to strengthen and restrengthen ourselves and our families on a daily basis.(I commit myself to doing so with these words taken from a fellow sister in Australia, "I will not and choose not to deter myself from doing the Lord's work.")

Marriage is Ordained of God
I love my family. I am thankful for a husband who loves me and tells me what a good person I am. A special thanks to my children for teaching me how to be a mom. It's taking me many years, but I'm happy with the privilege that I've been given to be yours. And even though it's taking me years, that's okay because we have the promise of Eternity.
(Written 1-27-12)
I recently read an article somebody posted on Facebook.
Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher live in North Carolina. They have been married nearly 86 years. Zelma is 101 and Herbert is 104 (at the time of the article). For Valentine’s Day, they were willing to answer some questions about their lives together. Because of their commitment to the Lord and to each other, divorce was never an option or even a thought in their marriage. They were best friends before they married. They have done what was needed for each other and for their family. To those who are losing hope in finding a marriage partner, they said, “He/she is never too far away, so keep the faith—when you meet him, you’ll know.” The best marriage advice is to respect, support, and communicate with each other. Be faithful, honest, and true. Love each other with all of your heart. Zelmyra said that her husband is a hard worker and a good provider. He’s a good man. They looked for ways to serve each other and they celebrated each other’s successes and shared their accomplishments. They grew together. Their most important reward is their legacy of 5 children, 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. With their children grown, they enjoy visiting together on the porch. They have always remembered that God put them together on the same team to be winners. Marriage is not a contest. They learned to compromise and work together.
In the beginning God created man and woman (See Genesis 1:27, Matthew 19:4-5). Because of agency, Adam and Eve were allowed to enter mortality and become our first parents. God ordained that they be married and that their union be blessed with children, even all the families of the earth. In Genesis 2:24 we read, “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” The same scripture is repeated in Matthew 19:5. Prophets today have also repeated these fundamental truths held by all former prophets in The Family: A Proclamation to the World. Because they have the spirit of revelation and the testimony of Jesus Christ, they were able to foresee the dilemma that would develop in our world over the issue of traditional, God-ordained marriage.
Adam and Eve were good, faithful people chosen by our Heavenly Father in pre-mortality to be our first parents. Like Adam and Eve, all of their children have been given agency. Agency gives us the ability to make choices within the constructs of law to which we are all subject. Agency does not give us the ability to choose the consequences which follow our choices, nor does it give us the right to alter God ordained law.
There are those who have and will call me unkind because I believe that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God. They have the sophistry of the day to support their logic. I have my testimony in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and God’s Plan of Happiness for His children. Acting superior by pretending to be magnanimous does not prove one believes in equality. True understanding must stem from having in place a deep-rooted belief system that although we are all children of God, He knows and loves us better than we do ourselves, and although He knows that obedience to His laws is what will bring us happiness, He will not personally impose discipleship. While He must certainly expect that His children also not impose obedience on each other, He most assuredly does not condone the repealing of His laws.
If the world was created, there is a Creator. If the universe is governed by law, there is a Law Giver. I believe that God is the Creator, and I believe that He is also the Law Giver. As His child and His creation, I have no power to re-create Him or to redefine His laws.
This life is a period of testing. It is a time for us to learn how to obey and to learn to walk by faith. It behooves us to do all that we can to strengthen our testimony of Jesus Christ and His gospel so that we can help others to also walk by faith. It is only through keeping the commandments that we can gain a testimony of the sacred nature of each commandment. Obedience, or faithfulness, is what produces faith. We cannot expect the faithless to understand faith without inviting them to practice the principles that lead to it. But when one truly understand the promise of the gift of Eternal Life and that it is available to all, then putting our lives in harmony with God’s laws seems like a most favorable choice. I personally am in favor of conforming my life to His will so that I can receive the promised blessings, and I also desire that my brothers and sisters be allowed this choice. We cannot pretend that it’s all right to chase fabricated rainbows for non-existent pots of gold.
Because this life is a period of testing, we all have individual trials and challenges with which we must deal. We all have our quirks; we all have our problems; we all have our temptations. While it is true that God created us initially, he did not mean for us to stay in our infant condition, nor did He create us without the ability to choose. Within us are the seeds of godhood. One of the greatest gifts we have is agency or the freedom to choose. Each day we can redefine and recreate ourselves by the choices that we make, by our thoughts and our actions. To say that we are the way we are because God made us that way seems to be more of a copout than saying the devil made me do it. But life’s challenges are difficult, and we need to be loving and kind, and forgiving of ourselves and others. We need to be patient and we need to be accepting. We need to learn to embrace our brothers and sisters without embracing the actions that we know to be wrong. If we all tried to be more loving and accepting and less judgmental and offish, the world would spin ever more nicely on its axis and follow its orbit with greater ease. To some degree, we are all recovering sinners, in need of guidance, love, and forgiveness. It would be a wonderful thing to have our chapel filled with more sinners. The Lord didn’t come to call the righteous to repentance, but the sinners (See Luke 5:31-32). Because we have agency, we can choose our own attitude each day even when our challenges seem insurmountable. The Lord is always there to help us, and His hand is stretched out still.
Testimony of the Savior, the Plan of Salvation, and Marriage that is Ordained of God:
I know that the Savior lives and He loves me, and He loves you. He has sent His peace and His comfort to me through the power of the Holy Ghost many times. I have felt His presence with me when I have needed Him here. I know that He is with all of us when we need Him, because He atoned for each of us and He knows and loves us personally. We can take our worries and our troubles to Him (See Matthew 11:28). He will sustain us despite our sins and weaknesses. He will provide a way for our progress and our deliverance. We can and should also turn to our ecclesiastical leader so that he can offer us help and direction in our times of spiritual need. When the dark of night overtakes you, look to the source of all light, Jesus Christ. He will again carry you through to the light of day.
I know that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God. We have the choice and opportunity to follow God’s laws and to follow His prophets. I know that God is not a respecter of persons and that He loves us all. I know that there are actions, behaviors, and choices that the Lord cannot condone, nor can the Lord’s servants. This is not because He and His servants do not love God’s children, but it is because they do love us. They understand His great Plan of Happiness and they understand the far reaching power and effects of the Atonement.
I know and understand that there are urges, temptations, and attractions with which many people struggle. Indeed, none of us is free from temptation in our lives. I also know that the Lord has promised us that if we are humble and we turn to Him that he will make weak things become strong unto us (See Ether 12:27). Of this I have a testimony. Some of us may struggle with the same problems and temptations our entire lifetime, but with good attitudes and faith in the Lord, the Lord will carry us through, give us hope, and help us on our journey to become like Him. He has said, “Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me for my yoke is easy and my burden is light and ye shall find rest unto your souls” (Matthew 11:28-30).
I understand that many people have struggled with same sex attraction. The problem is very real, and many are confused about the choices and eternal consequences that are available to them. I do not think that I am showing anyone great love or proper respect by making them believe that same sex relationships are acceptable. I, in essence, feel that if I were to do this, I would be denying the power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ and the Plan of Salvation and Exaltation that are made available through the Atonement. I believe the Savior’s words to be true. We all must take up our crosses, whatever they may be, and follow Him. If we endure to the end, we shall have Eternal Life which is the greatest gift of all (See Doctrine and Covenants 14:7). Why would I want to deny anyone the opportunity for that gift by telling him or her that whatever lifestyle they choose is correct and acceptable when the Lord and His prophets have said that this is not so?
I am thankful that I personally heard and answered a prophet’s call. Make no mistake, the LDS Church did not write Proposition 8. The people of California did that. And the majority voted for and passed both Proposition 22 and Proposition 8. But when a prophet asked us to support Proposition 8 with our time and our money, my husband and I were happy to do so. We did not need to question if it were the right thing to do, because our testimonies were firmly planted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and in His restored Church. We did not have to take a new look or assess if we needed to take a different stand, because we know that the Lord said in His own Preface to the Doctrine and Covenants, “Whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same” (See Doctrine and Covenants 1:38). We also realized that what the prophet asked us to do was in harmony with the gospel of Jesus Christ according to all the scriptures, with which we are familiar, and the voices of past prophets.
Will we be asked to do the same thing again? I do not know. But I know that we will be asked to do things that are seemingly just as difficult or even much more difficult. Although many people of all different faiths made up the majority who voted in favor of Proposition 8 and who also donated money and time to this cause, many were offended with our Church’s involvement, among whom were members of our Church. (Some of these have used this issue to become disaffected from the Church and justify their choices to forsake their beliefs and disobey the commandments. Some now fight actively against Christianity altogether.) We need to make certain that the challenges of today do not have the power to make us feel conflicted too long, that they do not have the power to pull us away from the Savior. We have the choice to be humble and prayerful, to seek the Spirit and to remain faithful.
What are all of us willing to do to make sure that we stay on the Lord’s side in these last days? What do you need to do personally? If you do not have a firm testimony of Jesus Christ, get one. Pray with all earnestness of heart. Read your scriptures, especially the Book of Mormon and the New Testament. Find out who Jesus is—He is your personal Savior and Redeemer; and He is mine. Once you know that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, and that He atoned for you, pray to know that His restored Church is true. Pray to know that Joseph Smith was the prophet of the Restoration and that Thomas S. Monson is the Lord’s prophet today. Continue to study the Book of Mormon and the New Testament, and begin to read and understand the Doctrine and Covenants. As you read this book, you will hear the Lord’s voice, because it is His book (See Doctrine and Covenants 18:33-36). Talk to the Bishop, set goals with Him and make promises to your Heavenly Father. Partake of the Sacrament worthily each week. Truly strive to remember the Lord in all that you think, do, and say (and write). Keep the commandments. Stay close to the Spirit and heed His counsel and His warnings. Know that if something is not in harmony with the teachings of the Lord as found in the scriptures or from the words available through modern day prophets, then that thing is incorrect. Use the scriptures, the words of our prophets, and the Spirit of the Holy Ghost as your guide. Do not let lesser sympathies or misunderstandings take charge of who you are or what you can become or of who other people are and what they can become. The Lord is faithful, and great blessings and promises are in store for all of His children who are faithful.
